The olive tree is an ancient constant element of the Sicilian landscape, it dates back to a period of prehistory. Thanks to the Ancient Greek and Phoenicians the olive tree became widespread in Sicily . Then it saw different stages of splendour and decay linked to the influence of the different conquering peoples. The Romans spread the cultivation, and the Normans developed it. A strong impulse for its further development came from the Bourbon and later by some noble families.
Sicily is particularly suitable to the olive growing due to a favourable climatic condition. Today Sicilian olive tree growing presents a wide variety of species due to thousands of years of adaptation and selection for the different soil and micro climates. However, the most ancient varieties like Nocellara, Biancolilla and Cerasuola still prevail.
